Each statue is made of polyresin and they come in a variety of sizes. ![]() Some of the statues are humorous such as one of a cat chasing a mouse, some are scary like a snake with huge fangs, and others represent American culture, most notably the Darth Vader gargoyle. It remains open to the public and many tours are offered including one highlighting the gargoyles and grotesques situated around the outside of the building. The Gothic-style building took a century to complete and is in the process of being repaired after suffering significant damage in an earthquake in August 2011. The price of admission and box lunch are included.The National Cathedral stands as a symbol of spiritual harmony and compassion among all faiths for this country and throughout the world. From the outside, admire the architectural concepts popularized by medieval Europe. Students will draw with simple, portable materials-pencil, charcoal, and paper. Students draw both inside and outside the cathedral (weather permitting) under the guidance and direction of drawing instructor Paul Glenshaw. This one-day workshop covers all these bases. The National Cathedral offers wonderful opportunities and subjects for drawing: immense vaulted arches, intricate Gothic tracery, funerary sculptures, relief sculptures, altarpieces, flying buttresses, soaring towers, grotesque gargoyles, gardens, and always fascinating interplays of light and shadow. ![]()
